Clinical Trial of Acupuncture for Long-Term Low Back Pain in Older Adults
Do you have low back pain now? Have you had it for at least 3 months?
If so, join us! You can help us find answers to long-term low back pain and how acupuncture can help improve your life.
We are studying acupuncture to see if it helps older patients with long-term low back pain. Acupuncture is an ancient treatment that is done by putting very thin needles in specific points on the body. Acupuncture is often used to treat low back pain, but it has never been studied among older adults.
The goal of the Back In Action study is to find out if acupuncture can improve function and reduce pain for people who have long-term low back pain.
Study Details
If you take part in the study, you will be assigned to 1 of 3 groups by chance:
-
One group will get up to 15 acupuncture treatments over 3 months.
-
One group will get up to 21 acupuncture treatments over 6 months.
-
One group will receive their usual care for their back pain. This group will not get acupuncture as part of the study.
If you are in a group that gets acupuncture, the study will pay for your acupuncture visits and you will be asked to choose from a list of acupuncturists near you. Everyone who joins the study will get paid for every survey they complete. You will be asked to tell us about your pain and function every month for one year. At the end of the year, you will get up to $135 in gift cards that you can spend anywhere. If you are assigned to get acupuncture, your low back pain might get better. This study may also help us learn how to improve care for low back pain in the future for you and others.
